What is Chiptuning?

Today, most of the automotive engines are managed by an ECU (Electronic Control Unit). This computer calculates the amount of fuel injected as well as the advance timing in function of several parameters such as the mixture, air temperature and density, engine revs, throttle position, battery tension, etc...
All this is performed in agreement with the current anti-pollution legislation. For engines fitted with a turbo the ECU calculates as well the boost-pressure. For turbo diesel engines, the ECU will calculate in addition to the turbo pressure, the pump timing and the amount of diesel to be injected. All this data is stored in the Eproms or chip. The modification consists in changing the original parameters by enhanced and improved ones. This will increase the power and torque of the engine resulting in improved performance and drivability. The obtained gain will be between 8 and 30% in power and 15 to 40% in torque depending on whether it is a turbocharged or a normally aspirated engine.
